FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

COUNSELLING

Counselling mainly deals with the client's present day-to-day issues rather than exploring the distant past. Short term work can be extremely effective for some people offering new coping mechanisms of dealing with their current conflicts. Counselling typically lasts between 6-12 weekly sessions.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Psychotherapy is usually seen as a longer term commitment than counselling and can take several months or even years.

Psychotherapy delves more into issues rooted in the past, helping you to understand how you function, enabling you to make the changes you desire in life.

Both Counselling and Psychotherapy will offer you a private, safe, non-judgemental and supported environment where you can explore problems and issues of concern or conflict.

WHAT ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY?

Confidentiality is very important in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Counselling and Psychotherapy sessions are confidential and any information shared by you will be respected and kept confidential. However, in exceptional circumstances I am legally required to break confidentiality if for example, you had indicated that there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others. I would wherever reasonably possible, inform you first.

HOW DO I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

The best way to contact me is by telephone and email. As I do not interrupt sessions to answer the telephone, you may get the answer machine. This is confidential, you can leave your name and number, and any message, and I will call you back. I check my email daily and will respond to you as soon as I can.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Initially, I will offer you an initial assessment session. This will enable us to meet and discuss any worries or concerns you may have, and to decide whether we feel that we want to work together. If we decide to work together we can decide what it is you want from the counselling or psychotherapy process. We can discuss regular review sessions so that we can keep a focus on whether you are getting what you need. I see clients weekly, however, I appreciate that this is not always possible so I am willing to negotiate times and days on an individual basis.
